How many laser sessions will you actually need?

By Mikki· Published 28 June 2026· Last reviewed 28 June 2026· ~6 min read

Most people need a course of six to eight sessions for permanent hair reduction, spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by the occasional top-up. Coarser or hormonally-driven hair (such as PCOS) can take more. There is no honest “done in three” — anyone promising that is selling, not treating.

In short

  • The honest number: six to eight. A typical course for permanent reduction, then occasional maintenance.
  • Spaced four to six weeks apart. Set by your hair’s growth cycle, so a course runs six to twelve months.
  • It varies by area, hair and skin. Coarse, light or hormonal hair can need a few more sessions.
  • PCOS hair takes longer. Hormones keep waking follicles, so plan for more sessions and top-ups.
  • Beware “done in three”. No reputable clinic promises a fixed tiny number — the biology won’t allow it.

Why six to eight, and not three

The number of sessions isn’t a sales lever — it’s set by how your hair grows, and there’s no way around it.

Your follicles cycle through growing, resting and shedding phases, and laser only disables a follicle while it’s actively growing. At any one moment, only a fraction of the hairs in an area are in that phase. Each session catches that fraction; the next session, weeks later, catches the batch that has since woken up. It takes six to eight passes through these cycles to work through the majority of follicles — which is why a real course lands in that range.

Why the gap between sessions matters

Sessions are spaced four to six weeks apart so that a fresh batch of follicles has entered the growing phase before you treat again. Going more often doesn’t speed things up — it just treats resting follicles that won’t respond. That spacing is why a full course usually spans six to twelve months from start to finish.

What changes your number

  • The area. Underarms and bikini often respond quickly; faces and necks can be more stubborn.
  • Hair colour and thickness. Dark, coarse hair absorbs the light best. Very fine or light hair responds more slowly and may need more sessions.
  • Skin tone. Darker skin is treated with lower, more conservative energy for safety, which can mean a few extra sessions — a worthwhile trade for protecting the skin.
  • Hormones. Conditions like PCOS keep prompting new growth, so hormonal areas need more sessions and ongoing top-ups.

PCOS and hormonal hair

If your hair growth is hormonally driven, be a little more patient. Laser still helps a great deal — typically 50–70% reduction — but because the hormones keep waking follicles, you’ll usually need more sessions and a maintenance plan rather than a fixed finish line. We’re honest about this from the first consultation; there’s a fuller explanation on our laser for PCOS page.

Maintenance after your course

Once the course is done, most people are delighted with a large, permanent drop in hair. A small number of follicles may reactivate over the years — a single top-up session now and then keeps things smooth. At Mikki’s our courses of six are priced at five, and sessions never expire, so a busy patch at work never costs you a session. Want a realistic number for your areas? Frequently asked

Common questions.

How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?
Most people need six to eight sessions for permanent hair reduction, spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by occasional top-ups. The exact number depends on the area, your hair colour and thickness, your skin tone, and whether the growth is hormonal.
How long does a full laser course take?
Because sessions are spaced four to six weeks apart to match the hair-growth cycle, a full course of six to eight usually runs six to twelve months from start to finish. The appointments themselves are short; it’s the spacing that sets the timeline.
Can laser remove hair in three sessions?
No — not permanently. Only a fraction of your follicles are treatable at any one session because of the growth cycle, so three sessions can thin hair temporarily but won’t give lasting reduction. Any clinic promising “done in three” is overselling.
Why are sessions spaced weeks apart?
Laser only disables follicles in their active growing phase. Spacing sessions four to six weeks apart lets a new batch of follicles enter that phase before you treat again. Going more frequently treats resting follicles that won’t respond, so it doesn’t speed up results.
Does PCOS hair need more sessions?
Yes. Hormonally-driven hair, as in PCOS, keeps prompting new growth, so it typically needs more sessions and ongoing maintenance rather than a fixed end point. Laser still helps significantly — around 50–70% reduction — with a top-up plan.
Will I need top-ups after my course?
Often a few, occasionally. Most follicles stay disabled, but a small number can reactivate over the years, so an occasional single top-up keeps the area smooth. At our clinic, course sessions never expire, which makes maintenance easy.
