Questions to ask before laser.

Laser is safe in trained hands and risky in careless ones — and the difference is usually visible before you book, if you ask the right questions. Who is treating me and how are they trained? What machine is it and does it suit my skin? Will I get a patch test? A good clinic answers all of these openly. Evasive or vague answers are your cue to look elsewhere.

In short

  • Who’s treating me? Ask about the practitioner’s specific laser training and experience, not just the brand.
  • What machine, and does it suit my skin? The right laser for your Fitzpatrick type is a safety issue.
  • Will I get a patch test? The correct answer is always yes, with a wait before the first full session.
  • Is the clinic licensed and insured? Ask about the local licence and medical malpractice cover.
  • What’s the honest cost and cancellation policy? Clear pricing and terms up front signal a clinic that respects you.

Why asking matters

Laser hair removal is largely unregulated in who can buy a machine and switch it on — so vetting the clinic is on you.

The single biggest factor in whether laser is safe and effective isn’t the treatment itself — it’s the competence of the person delivering it. A handful of direct questions, asked at your consultation, will tell you almost everything about a clinic’s standards. Here are the ones that count, and what a good answer sounds like.

The checklist

Ask these before you book

Good answers sound like

  • “Our practitioners hold a Level 4 laser qualification.”
  • “It’s an 800nm diode with cooling — suitable for your skin.”
  • “Yes, we patch test and wait 24–48h before your first session.”
  • “We’re licensed by the local authority and fully insured.”
  • “Here’s the full price and our cancellation policy in writing.”

Walk away if you hear

  • “You don’t need a patch test, we’ll start today.”
  • “It works on everyone, don’t worry about skin type.”
  • Vagueness about who is qualified or how.
  • No mention of a licence or insurance.
  • Pressure to buy a big package on the spot.

1. Who will actually treat me, and how are they trained?

You want a named, trained practitioner — ideally with a recognised laser qualification (in the UK, a Level 4 laser diploma is the benchmark) and real experience. Ask how long they’ve been doing laser and how many treatments they’ve done. A confident clinic is proud to tell you; a hesitant one is telling you something too. We explain why in why training matters.

2. What machine is it, and is it right for my skin?

The machine and the practitioner’s ability to set it for your skin tone is a safety matter, not a technicality. Ask what laser they use and whether it suits your Fitzpatrick skin type — particularly important for darker skin, where the wrong machine or settings risk burns. “It works on everyone” is not a real answer.

3. Will I get a patch test?

The only correct answer is yes — a patch test followed by a wait before your first full session. It’s the key safeguard against a reaction, and any offer to skip it for a same-day treatment should end the conversation.

4. Is the clinic licensed and insured?

In many areas, laser and cosmetic treatment clinics need a local licence, and any reputable clinic carries insurance including medical malpractice cover. Ask about both. Our Aldgate clinic holds a Special Treatments licence from the City of London Corporation and is fully insured — the kind of thing a good clinic mentions without being pushed.

5. What’s the honest cost — and the cancellation policy?

Ask for the full price of a course (not just a per-session teaser), what a top-up costs later, and the cancellation and refund terms in writing. Transparency here reflects how the clinic treats you generally. We break down what you’re actually paying for in the real cost of laser.

You’re not being difficult by asking these — you’re being sensible. The clinics worth trusting are the ones that welcome the questions.

Bring this list with you

Save or screenshot these five questions and ask them at your consultation. The answers — and how willingly they’re given — will tell you whether you’ve found a clinic that puts your safety first. If you’re in the City of London, we’ll happily answer every one at a free consultation at our Aldgate clinic.

Frequently asked

Common questions.

What should I ask before booking laser hair removal?
Ask who will treat you and how they are trained, what machine they use and whether it suits your skin tone, whether you will get a patch test, whether the clinic is licensed and insured, and what the full cost and cancellation policy are. Open, specific answers signal a safe clinic; vague or evasive ones are a warning.
What laser qualification should a practitioner have?
In the UK, a Level 4 Certificate or Diploma in laser and light treatments is the recognised benchmark, alongside genuine hands-on experience. Ask how long the practitioner has been performing laser and roughly how many treatments they have done. A reputable clinic answers this readily.
Should a clinic always offer a patch test?
Yes. A patch test before your first full session, with a wait of typically 24–48 hours to check your skin’s response, is a core safety step. If a clinic offers to skip it so they can treat you the same day, treat that as a serious red flag.
Does a laser clinic need a licence?
In many areas cosmetic laser clinics require a local authority licence, and any reputable clinic also carries insurance including medical malpractice cover. Our Aldgate clinic holds a Special Treatments licence from the City of London Corporation and is fully insured. It is reasonable to ask any clinic about both.
Is it rude to ask a clinic lots of questions?
Not at all — it is sensible, and good clinics welcome it. The questions cost nothing and reveal a clinic’s standards quickly. Any provider who is irritated or evasive when you ask about training, safety or pricing is telling you something useful.
